Interview with Nicolas Joachim-Eugène

Can you introduce yourself to our readers?

I am Nicolas JOACHIM-EUGÈNE, a radio-television-digital host and producer since the early 2000s, and currently an international consultant and expert in D.M.R (Dispositifs Média en Réseau – Networked Media Systems). This expertise has been developed over decades, particularly in the French overseas territories, across seas and oceans.

Tell us about your educational background, your beginnings in media, and the key milestones of your career:

With a scientific background (second year in a general engineering school in mainland France), I launched my first networked media systems in the early 2000s within civil society, notably after being elected the first Youth Ambassador of my territory under the title « Mr. Guadeloupe 2000. » I then produced or coordinated numerous educational media campaigns for radio, television, and the internet—first in Guadeloupe, and later in other overseas territories. I hold a degree in organizational management and helped structure these experiments into real public policy tools, especially useful during times of crisis.

In 2022, alongside a government mission within the framework of the Interministerial Youth Action Plan (P.A.I.J), I was awarded the Overseas Commitment Medal by the Ministry of the Interior. Since 2024, work has begun to transmit D.M.R expertise on a national and international scale.

What motivated you to enter the media industry?

My initial motivation was to use media as a tool to support and mobilize grassroots actors and the population. From my earliest experiences, particularly through charitable and educational missions with the ASCA association in 2000 (Association for Solidarity and Activity Creation), I understood that media systems are powerful tools for creating and promoting positive values in society.

What memories do you have of your first shows?

The most memorable moments were the enthusiastic feedback from young audiences and the educational community, seeing their work highlighted on radio and television. It was at that moment that the concept of Networked Media Systems emerged as a tool for public interest and collective mobilization.

Was there a person or a show that inspired you at the beginning?

Yes, several personalities—famous or anonymous—from journalism, the arts, or civil society helped shape my journey. Some local programs were role models, while others served as counterexamples.

A tribute documentary tracing these inspirations is currently in preparation for 2025–2050. It is indeed essential to identify and honor, for posterity, these inspiring figures from the peoples of the seas and oceans—too often overlooked, or even opposed. The recognition and promotion of this legacy is the very DNA of the D.M.R approach: a living expertise born from these territories.

How did you experience the transition from simple host to influential media figure?

The transition happened naturally, as I received increasing requests from authorities and community stakeholders. I embraced it calmly, happy to combine my passion for audiovisual work with civic engagement.

However, during the early years, I sometimes struggled to clearly explain this D.M.R expertise, which is inherently rooted in our maritime territories. In this context, the growing impact of media experiments led to the formalization of « non-partisan » and « transpartisan » D.M.R methodologies. These frameworks personally helped me to calmly manage pressures—whether political, financial, or otherwise.

Which projects or programs have left the greatest impression on you?

Projects conducted during times of crisis have left a deep mark on me: campaigns like “Return to the Homeland Exchanges,” educational series to promote academic success, youth mobilization efforts, family support initiatives, and prevention campaigns. These projects led to recognition and real, tangible transformation.

It’s also important to highlight the power of these tools on the ground, especially through « D.M.R street marketing » strategies: local poster campaigns, grassroots distribution, door-to-door approaches, and community visits—all of which increased both the impact and interactivity of these tools with people on the ground.

Have you faced major challenges? How did you overcome them?

Yes, many challenges related to social, political, or health crises. But it was precisely from these situations that practical and replicable solutions emerged—now compiled into what we call D.M.R expertise, which is today shared across the overseas territories.

This regular process of compiling and improving solutions to challenges is what truly gave birth to the D.M.R framework. Moreover, the combined contexts of insularity, isolation, and multiple crises in our territories turned them into real laboratories—giving rise to the D.M.R legacy of the peoples of the seas and oceans, now accessible to all.

How would you describe your hosting style or media signature?

My style is rather classic, sometimes journalistic, but always adaptable to the dynamics of young local leaders involved in the system. My strength lies in mentoring and training young hosts from these community relays.

I still regularly appear on public broadcasting platforms (radio, TV, and digital through France Télévisions), as well as on private media networks across the overseas territories worldwide.

What essential skills are required to succeed in this profession?

You need to combine skills in production, hosting, project management, and team leadership. Networking is also key in any networked media system.

What is your take on the evolution of traditional media in the age of social media?

Traditional media must continue to adopt multi-platform broadcasting strategies, replay mechanisms, and maintain a strong digital presence. These are key pillars of the D.M.R expertise, which offers flexible and adaptable models for any context.

Do radio and traditional media still have a future? In what form?

Yes, as long as they embrace mutualization, interactivity, and complementarity with social networks. D.M.R experiments have shown that it’s possible to boost both audience ratings and social impact.

It’s worth noting that D.M.R’s “street marketing” approach—including poster campaigns, field distributions, and community visits—remains a powerful component of its interactive and attractive impact.

What are your current or upcoming projects in the media sector?

I am currently expanding the international transmission of D.M.R expertise through documentaries, televised seminars, and dialogue spaces (both physical and digital), in collaboration with overseas and international actors.

Do you plan to pass on your experience to younger generations? In what form?

Yes, it is actually one of my main objectives. Overseas exchange hubs are being created, especially from Saint Martin, combining in-person and digital formats to support the live transmission of this expertise to younger generations.

In fact, between 2025 and 2030, a regular international media exchange network among the peoples of the seas and oceans is already taking shape (starting from Saint Martin, among other locations).

If you were to create a media outlet today, what would its concept be?

I wouldn’t create another media outlet—I would produce content specifically designed to be shared across existing media, in accordance with D.M.R principles. This ensures sustainability, visibility, and collective impact.

What message would you like to share with those dreaming of a career in media?

I encourage them to draw inspiration from the experiences of the peoples of the seas and oceans, and to use D.M.R systems to build meaningful, sustainable, and high-impact projects. The expertise is open-source, and I am now available as a consultant to support anyone interested, through mutually beneficial partnerships.
